Geikie Gorge Aboriginal Adventure
(Safari Cabin accommodation)

A wonderful taste of the Kimberley. This short getaway combines renowned icons and gorges of the region with a unique Aboriginal cultural experience that will etch the Kimberley into your memory for years to come.

Day 1 Broome to Fitzroy Crossing (L, D)
We set off on our journey heading north to Willare Bridge, we cross the mighty Fitzroy River and break for morning tea at one of the Kimberley's most famous landmarks the Prison Boab Tree, once used to hold convicts. We also view Myalls Bore, a 120 metre long trough built in the early 1900's used to water up to 1,000 head of cattle at one time. We travel inland along the famous 'Gibb River Road', once used as the main stock route for the region. Onto pre-historic Windjana Gorge, regarded as one of the classic features of world geology and a great freshwater crocodile spotting site. From here we head to Tunnel Creek, an amazing 750 metre long flooded tube tunnel. We take an exciting walk through the tunnel wading through knee to thigh high water in some sections and learn the story of how the tunnel was used as a hideout for the renowned Aboriginal 'Pigeon'. Following afternoon tea we travel to Fitzroy Crossing for our overnight stay.
BBQ Dinner, Overnight & Continental Breakfast:
Fitzroy River Lodge or similar.
(safari cabin with ensuite).

Day 2 Fitzroy Crossing to Broome (B, L)
This morning we travel out to Geikie Gorge for a memorable 3 hour Darngku Heritage Cruise hosted by local Aboriginal Bunuba Cultural guides. Our tour includes boat cruise through Geikie Gorge down the Fitzroy River. En route the guide will involve you in a fascinating view of Aboriginal culture, Dreamtime stories, bush tucker, animal tracks and traditional plant uses and cultural practices. We view geological sea fossils and spot native animals including birds and crocodiles and visit the old camping area of Bunbura people where we have the rare chance to take an optional (strenuous) climb to a panoramic lookout. All the while your Bunuba guides will engage you in discussion and participation of traditional practices. From here we head off for our return trip to Broome with an en route break for afternoon tea with arrival in Broome at approximately 6.00 pm.

Important Note: Accessing Tunnel Creek walk involves 20 metres of clambering over boulders and 700 metres of wading through knee to thigh high water (shorts are ideal). Strap on sandals or old sandshoes must be worn through the water as the creek bed is rocky and footwear is required to avoid injury. To safely navigate the Tunnel passengers must be able to walk and balance themselves on uneven ground. Torches are provided.
